Traditional and orthopedic acupuncture for pain relief, stress management, and whole-body wellness.

About Acupuncture Services

At Evolve Integrated Health, acupuncture is provided by Jenna Sheppard, R.Ac and Dr. Gina Brown, ND. Jenna specializes in orthopedic acupuncture and electroacupuncture, working with modern evidence-informed techniques and a strong focus on acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain — musculoskeletal injuries, joint pain, back and neck pain, nerve pain, and sports-related injuries.

Acupuncture at Evolve draws on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine while integrating modern anatomical knowledge and evidence-informed techniques. Fine, sterile needles are placed at specific points on the body to stimulate healing, reduce pain, and restore balance.

We believe acupuncture works best as part of a collaborative care team. Many of our acupuncture patients also work with our chiropractors, massage therapists, and physiotherapists to address injury, pain, and wellness goals from multiple angles.

How We Treat

Every acupuncture treatment at Evolve begins with a thorough assessment of your health history, goals, and current symptoms. Your acupuncturist will explain their findings and outline a personalized treatment plan designed specifically for you.

Traditional Acupuncture

Grounded in the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, this approach uses fine, sterile needles inserted at specific points along the body’s meridians to restore energy balance and promote the body’s natural healing processes. Your acupuncturist assesses the whole system — not just isolated symptoms — to develop a comprehensive treatment strategy.

Orthopedic Acupuncture

A modern, anatomy-focused approach targeting musculoskeletal conditions. This technique uses knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics to treat pain and injury at its source — directly addressing affected joints, muscles, tendons, and nerves. Orthopedic acupuncture is particularly effective for sports injuries, repetitive strain, and localized pain.

Electroacupuncture

Gentle electrical stimulation applied through acupuncture needles to enhance treatment effects. The mild current gently stimulates the needled points, increasing the therapeutic response. Electroacupuncture is especially effective for chronic pain, nerve pain, and muscle recovery.

The Total Reset Session

A specialized whole-body treatment designed for patients seeking a comprehensive rebalancing. This session goes beyond standard acupuncture to address multiple systems and restore full-body wellness.

What to Expect During Treatment

Your initial acupuncture session lasts 60 minutes. Your acupuncturist will conduct a detailed health history interview and TCM-based assessment, discuss your goals, develop a treatment plan, and provide acupuncture. Subsequent sessions are also 60 minutes and focus on treatment.

Most patients feel relaxed during and after their session. The needles are incredibly fine, and many patients report barely feeling them at all. Mild sensations like warmth, tingling, or a dull ache are normal and often indicate the treatment is working.

Acupuncture FAQs

Does acupuncture hurt?

The needles used in acupuncture are extremely fine — much thinner than injection needles. Most patients feel minimal sensation, often just a slight tingling, warmth, or dull ache at the insertion point. Many find acupuncture deeply relaxing and meditative.

What should I expect at my first acupuncture appointment?

Your initial session lasts 60 minutes. Your acupuncturist will conduct a detailed health history interview, perform a TCM-based assessment, discuss your goals and any concerns, develop a treatment plan, and then provide acupuncture. Wear loose, comfortable clothing so your arms and legs can be easily accessed.

How many acupuncture sessions will I need?

This depends entirely on your condition, its severity, and your goals. Some patients notice improvement after just 1–2 sessions, while chronic or complex conditions may require 6–10 sessions or more. Your acupuncturist will provide a recommended treatment plan during your initial session and adjust it as you progress.

Is acupuncture covered by insurance?

Yes, many extended health insurance plans in Nova Scotia cover acupuncture. We offer direct billing for major providers including Blue Cross, Greenshield, Sun Life Financial, Manulife, and Canada Life. Call us at 902-707-5429 to verify your coverage.

Can I combine acupuncture with other treatments at Evolve?

Absolutely. Acupuncture pairs exceptionally well with chiropractic, massage therapy, and physiotherapy. Many patients benefit from a multi-disciplinary approach to healing.
